As some of you already know, I have been lobbying for many months with a friend locally to try to bring music back into our public school board here in Eastern Ontario (UCDSB) in the elementary system where it has declined badly.
I am sending along the Ministry of Education official petition asking that music be made a protected subject in elementary schools, as French is now. This is but one step towards bringing back quality music education into the elementary system. I am hoping that your friends, neighbours and family members who appreciate the value of what music can do for children will support this. Research has shown that early music education helps literacy, reading skills, math skills, socialization, confidence, enjoyment of school, and is good for mental health.
Although this petition has our MPP's name on it, as he will present it to legislature when it sits again Feb 22, it can be signed by any resident of Ontario. It is also not attached to any particular school board, so anyone can sign no matter where they work or where their children go to school. It must be signed in person-- not on line, and photocopies of names are not acceptable, although it is OK to photocopy the unsigned petition in B and W before getting signatures. It can be returned by mail to the MPP office (address on bottom of petition). Music Petition

Introduction to TradConnect
I wonder if you would mind informing your members, especially those that like or play traditional Irish music about a social network I have set up from Dublin, called www.Tradconnect.com It's about connecting traditional Irish musicians across the world. It’s all free and non commercial and is really taking off. Irish American magazine are publishing an article on it in July. If you look at it I am sure you will like the idea. Apologies for contacting you in this manner, but it’s just me and my laptop in Dublin trying to push this thing.
Thanks

For some time considered a bit of a joke, the accordion [we have several at Joe's M.I.L.L. .] is enjoying a renewed - and much deserved - surge of interest these days. With that in mind, one of our 'box-squeezers' has come up with the idea of forming an 'accordion club' where players [or wish-to-be players] of all skill levels can meet and share their common interest in this classic instrument. Here's the scoop .

This is the time of year to take out or renew a membership in CCE Kingston Harp of Tara, the driving force behind most of the grass-roots Irish events in Kingston, from weekly classes in Irish Dance, Language, and Music; monthly Céilí's and a Siamsa; to world-class house concerts and advanced-level workshops. We've also been the principle organizational pillar of the North American Gaeltacht, which has raised international interest.
New members with new ideas and energy, or ideas for improvements in what we are doing, are always more than welcome. Apart from that, the benefits are a magazine, and discounts at all Comhaltas events, anywhere in the world.

Hi all,
I posted a short video that I took up on YouTube. You can search for County
Céilí or Quinte Irish Society to find it. Heck you could even
use the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smdyshUOdfk.
I linked the video to the QICS events page (http://www.qics.ca/http://www.qics.ca/)
and have also included a little photo gallery.

A Note from James Kelly
I am now offering Irish music students the opportunity to take lessons
from me via the internet. These are real time lessons that allow us to
exchange musical information and ideas via the web. The beauty of these
lessons is the fact that we can see and hear each other, in person, and
the feedback is instantaneous. The technical set up is straight forward,
and the audio and video feed via the internet has been very good. I am offering these lessons primarily to fiddlers; however, on occasion,
non-fiddlers have requested some general musical feedback on their
playing, and I've always been happy to accommodate their requests for
lessons.
If you would like more information about taking an internet lesson with
me, please write to me at jameskellymusic@yahoo.com and I will send you
all the details.
Thank you.
